Prices and rentals in Phuket: housing, bikes, cars and baht exchange rate without tourist illusions

Phuket can be both expensive and rational. It all comes down to the area, the season, the rental period, the transport strategy and how you exchange money for baht.

Prices and rentals in Phuket: housing, bikes, cars and baht exchange rate without tourist illusions

Phuket is often called an expensive island, but this is too harsh a description. In fact, Phuket is expensive for those who live in a mode of random decisions: they rent a house in high season a week before arrival, take a taxi every day across half the island, change money in the first place they come across and choose an area only because of the beautiful beach. If you approach it systematically, the budget becomes much clearer.

The main expense item is housing. In 2026, a normal studio or one-room format outside the most expensive beach areas often starts from around 15,000-25,000 baht per month for long rentals. In stronger areas, near the sea, schools, Laguna, Bang Tao, Kamala, Kata or Rawai, a realistic range for a good 1-bedroom can quickly go to 30,000-60,000 baht and above. Villas are considered a different economy: bedrooms, a pool, season, management and utility bills are important there.

The price of housing in Phuket depends not only on the area, but also on the season, area, contract term and quality of management.

Short leases are almost always more expensive. January, New Year, Chinese New Year and the winter months can raise rates sharply. The same object in the low season and on peak dates are sometimes two different economies. Therefore, for living for a month or more, it is better to plan in advance, and for purchasing real estate, look not only at the potential price per night, but also at the annual occupancy.

The bike remains the cheapest and most flexible way to get around, but only for those who really know how to ride and have the right documents. In 2026, regular scooters often cost around 150-500 baht per day depending on the model, condition and season. For a month, the price may be noticeably lower per day. It is better not to leave your passport as collateral: the normal scheme is an agreement, a deposit, a photo of the condition, a helmet and clear conditions for damage.

A car is more expensive, but for a family, the rainy season and traveling with children it is often more reasonable. For local agencies, a compact car usually starts from about 800-1,200 baht per day, middle class and small SUVs are higher. For a month the rate can be much more profitable. It is important to look at insurance, deductible, deposit, tire and glass damage limits, and have an international driver's license, because an accident without documents quickly turns savings into a problem.

Taxis and apps are convenient if there are few trips. But if you travel every day from Rawai to Bang Tao, from Kamala to Phuket Town or from Laguna to the south of the island, your transport budget can become an unpleasant surprise. Therefore, the area of โ€‹โ€‹residence is not only the view from the window. This is the distance to school, beach, store, clinic, gym, children's activities and your actual routes.

The baht exchange rate does not need to be fixed in your head with one number. THB changes daily, and bank displays, licensed exchange counters and applications may vary. For the budget, it is better to count with a reserve and check the current exchange rate on the day of exchange. At the beginning of June 2026, the market benchmark for USD/THB was around a low 32 baht per dollar, but for a tourist it is not the figure itself that is more important, but the difference between the place of exchange, the commission and the payment method.

The rule of thumb for exchange is simple: do not change large amounts at the first window of the airport, do not carry the entire cache with you, compare several exchangers, check bills and receipts, and use the card with an understanding of the fees. Foreign cards at ATMs in Thailand often have a fixed withdrawal fee, so it is better to understand the limits in advance and not split each small amount into separate transactions.

Phuket is expensive not because the island is budget-friendly. It is expensive when a person does not manage the logistics. Housing close to your real life, transport that suits your scenario, normal currency exchange and an understanding of seasonality provide more savings than an endless search for the cheapest option.
